HOUZZ with RedAgape

Saying that I was thrilled would be an understatement when Houzz Australia contacted us at Jumbled. I have used Houzz as an invaluable design source while renovating my own home. You must check it out if you haven’t already as there will surely find something that tickles your fancy.

Houzz has just launched a new series called” At Home With…” It’s a fortnightly instalment designed to celebrate Australia’s best home and lifestyle bloggers as we step inside their humble abodes to learn more about who they are, what their blog’s about and how it came to be.

They kicked off with Amanda O’Sullivan and her inspiring DIY and craft blog RedAgape which she writes out of her country home in Dubbo, NSW. A few years ago, Mandy had reached a stage in her life where she was determined to find an outlet for her creative passions – and she didn’t have to wait long to find one.

In April 2012, on a weekend away in the picturesque village of Millthorpe, NSW, Mandy fell so head over heels with the town she decided to buy an 1890s bluestone foundation house there, planning to turn it into a delightful guesthouse. She set up the RedApape blog as a way to document her renovation and also as a platform to share her home-styling tips, craft tutorials and more.

Houzz has asked each blogger to choose their favourite shop to giveaway a $50 voucher from….and guess who Amanda picked…..Jumbled!!!

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning it is to comment on the Houzz article and they will pick the most creative and unique answer as the winner. So jump on and read more about Amanda and her blog….and don’t forget to leave that comment by 5pm AEST on Sunday 9 November

We're Hooked!

We are so pumped to introduce you to our newest member of Team Jumbled, The Hook Co. Woo hoo! These little hooks are the ultimate..........the perfect combination of cool, functional and simply beautiful. We couldn't wait to ask Kellie Nash, founder of The Hook Co. just what inspired this collection and of course, how she uses them in her own home.

How did Hook and Co start?
The hook co. was established out of a personal search for some cool hooks for my children's bedrooms. I wanted something that could double as art & function, something simple, stylish, & in the colours that I love.  Something to hang the abundance of hats & other paraphernalia that we as Parents collect for our little people!

The hook - practical? pretty? both?
Definitely pretty, definitely practical! My Husband is a Carpenter/Builder & perfectionist! He makes up the other half of The Hook Co. and he would not go through with this product if it wasn't practical (he is a Virgo!). I am more the arty, 'right side of the brain' kind of person that wants to play with colour, wants things to look the part & wants to make use of my creative energy!
Fave colour combo
Oh this is a really hard one because I love colour & play with various combos daily! It is completely dependant on where the hooks are being used!  Having never been a pink person, I am surprisingly obsessed with 'think pink' and get a good feeling from seeing it next to our 'olive green' and 'mellow yellow'. I like to group things in odd numbers, I find it much more pleasing to the eye. So, aside from these three together, you can't go past three natural circles, 2 little and 1 big. So practical, stylish and suitable for any interior!

Your perfect day
My perfect day would be one spent with my family.  Start with a walk to the beach, a coffee, sunshine, a fresh, tasty salad to balance out the hot chips shared on a picnic blanket under a shady tree, a play in the park, followed by an ice cream. Relaxing swim at home (in the pool that's coming soon!) watching our boys from a comfy spot on the deck with a really cold glass of Sauvignon blanc & an antipasto plate, NO CHORES ALL DAY!

Mix or match
Definitely mix! I'm not a matchy, matchy person and my choices are all about whether or not I love something, not if it's going to match. If you love it, it will work! You will make it work! When it comes to our wall hooks, the beauty of these is that they can be a mix of colours & shapes or matched colours & shapes.
What is your style at home?
My style at home is eclectic, I love the old with the new, a blend of colour and neutrals.  I have a great love for rattan, natural materials & fabrics.  Our home is a modern weatherboard beach house with lots of traditional elements keeping it homely & cosy & very lived-in!
What makes the perfect room
Eye catching pieces, interesting finishes, things to look at, well thought out design, texture, warmth, character, personalisation!
Where do you have your hooks hanging in your home?
I have them in the boys rooms, and aside from hanging hats, bags & a skateboard, I find them great for getting creatively decorative with all sorts of 'hangable' items! I also have them all over a wall in my laundry, which is bag & hat central!  There's a wall in my bedroom ear marked for the next batch!
Check out the ways in which you could use wall hooks in your home. Try your living room, entrance way, bedroom or study nook. You can't really go wrong with something that is functional and beautiful.

Get Your Weave On!

TREND ALERT: GET YOUR WEAVE ON
Have you noticed the woven wall hangings popping up all over the place lately? This trend seems to be gaining momentum! Everywhere I look, there they are......from the super tiny and sweet to the huge and hairy!

I really must give credit to Kel from Chief and Kewpie for igniting my interest in woven wall art. I can't remember when I first stumbled upon Kel's amazing wall hangings on Instagram, but I think it was LOVE at first sight.

Weavings are a great way to add colour, texture and warmth to any space.

Try clustering a collection together for max impact or just pop one amongst the other goodies in your home to ramp up the texture and personality in your space.

Wall hangings can be ultra simple, whilst the next will have layers upon layers of texture, colour, fringing, pom poms, tassels and knots.

At Jumbled we LOVE this trend so much that we had to dedicated a Pinterest board to the art form. We are just blown away by just how clever people are and what wild pieces can be created by just a loom a little bit of creativity.

So if you are feeling inspired by this trend, the we have some awesome news for you! We're hosting a Weaving Workshop with Kel on the 1st and 2nd November! There are still some seats available. This 3hr beginners weaving class will cover the 4 basic techniques you will need to complete a weave. It's going to be really hands on with lots of chatting, food and hopefully laughs.
Tickets are $195 and that includes the workshop, refreshments and a take home loom kit!

Saturday 1st November 4pm- 7pm (purchase tickets here)

Sunday 2nd November 10am- 1pm (purchase tickets here)

“Weave” got to give this trend a try! (Sorry I had to finish with this!)

Love Pip and Jumbled xxx

Welcome Jessie Breakwell!

People often ask me “how do you know what to buy for Jumbled?”, but really it is so simple... I just stock exactly what I want in my own home and I cross my fingers that there is someone out there that feels the same as I do. The art of Jessie Breakwell is one of those MUST HAVE dream pieces that I would LOVE in my own home.

I first saw one Jessie’s Zebra artworks in the background of a Pooccio photo shoot and instantly fell in love. After much searching and then a little bit of stalking, Jessie has allowed Jumbled to stock some of her artworks. This has been a long time in the making, so I am just so pumped that the day is here and I can share our new artworks and more about Jessie with you all.

Jessie’s work is offbeat, quirky and full of wonder. She is strongly influenced by Brett Whiteley and French Fauvist artist Henri Matiss. Jessie’s paintings are vibrant and fun. “I don’t like to take life too seriously,” Jessie says. “I’m not into realism, there’s enough drama going on in the world at the moment so I prefer to take a lighter look at life. ” And that she does!

http://jumbledonline.com/collections/jessie-breakwell

Jessie has studied fine art and painting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and held successful exhibitions at Picasso Gallery in London, the posh Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles and sell-out openings in Melbourne. She has owned her own interactive gallery in Melbourne’s stylish High Street and enjoyed an eye-opening stint as art tutor to the wildly wild Ozzy Osbourne children.

Artist - Antoinette Murray

I recently met Antoinette down in Melbourne and was blown away by all of her gorgeous art....and not to mention how LOVELY she is! We are so excited to now have her as part of our little Jumbled family. We now have some of her prints and original art available in store and online...so check them out. I think that you will love them as much as we do here at Jumbled.

Antoinette took some time out from her painting to answer some questions about what inspires her art, home and style. Grab a cuppa and enjoy reading

Describe your perfect day

My perfect day….is usually a lazy morning brunch on a Sunday, cooking pancakes with my 5 & 7 year olds…...once we finally get dressed, a family outing together.  Simple pleasures like a walk along the local beach with our dog, fossicking in rock pools & finding beautifully coloured shells.  Or a spontaneous trip into town - Melbourne always has things to see & immerse yourself within.  Maybe a late afternoon glass of wine with my husband before we head home…..I love a Sunday night movie to switch off my mind and relax with my husband….

What inspires your art?

I find the sea very inspiring with it’s changing moods and colours.  Working with my children’s drawings reminds me of how well they interpret and capture the core of a subject, teaching me to return to simple and beautiful lines.  Art history, all forms of architecture and the natural world around me...

Fave colour combo?

At the moment I’m drawn to peach & grey….but I love cobalt blue & black too….too hard to choose!

What do you think makes the perfect room?

Great lighting….It sets the mood and can create different energy within a space, bringing artworks to vibrant life or making them a soft conversation in the corner.

Describe your style at home?

My family home is a mix of old and new - I think I’m drawn to a modern Scandinavian style.  I particularly enjoy the relaxed space of my front lounge room, with the fire, sheepskin throw on the armchair and the patterned rug.  I have one of my first paintings here to remind myself of the early ideas that helped form my current artistic style.  My family living and kitchen walls have my new artworks…..it’s a good way to get both positive feedback & constructive criticism from my family & friends - they are my most honest critics!

Mix or Match?

I mix with a hint of match….or maybe I match with a mix……ha!  I love patterns that work together with a mix of colour…..my Ninho designer towel collection hopes to achieve this once it arrives this December :)

Welcome... Mia Oatley

I was lucky enough to have been able to visit the studio of the super talented Mia Oatley. I have been admiring her work for some time, so I was thrilled to have been able to meet the lady and see her works in the flesh.

Mia is one of those people that you just feel right at ease with and you can’t help but feel excited by her bold, vivid style and her confident use of colour. Every canvas is dripping with colour and energy……oh gosh I just had the best afternoon gazing at all of her goodies!

This year Mia’s career was catapulted to another level when she was selected as a finalist in The Archibald Prize for her portrait of Tim Maguire. After trying 8 previous times, with one entry making it to the Salon Des Rufuses in 2011 it really was 9 nine times lucky!

Mia’s work may look familiar to you as she has been showcased in many of our fave magazines. Real Living featured Mia’s work in their 100th edition cover art June edition alongside the legendary Gorman, Martine Emdur, Blacklist studio, Beastman to name a few! Yen Magazine, www.adoremagazine.com and Belle magazine have also featured her work as an artist to keep your eyes on.

Mia really is the talk of the town. Queensland Homes Magazine quotes that “Mia Oatley is one of the most exciting young Australian artists to watch and most certainly to collect." And James Cockington from the SMH Financial Review as speculated that “the future worth of her paintings will be worth 5 million in 2050. Oatley is a highly promotable rising star creating bold, edgy and confrontational work."

 5 Mins with Mia!

Fave colour combo?

I love all colours, but especially aqua and orange, yellow and pinks, and violet and blues tones.

What inspires your work?

I find inspiration everywhere I go, but am especially attracted to colours and textures found in street art, in fashion, and in nature. I also love to meet other creatives who see the world in different ways, that is inspiring!

Describe your perfect day

I love to travel, and have new adventures so my perfect day would be to just get up and get on a plane and go somewhere completely new and different!

What is your style at home?

like to combine vintage pieces of furniture in with contemporary pieces. Home is a sanctuary so I love clean lines, and freshly painted white walls. It's the perfect space to hang big and colourful paintings.

Who would be your dream person to paint?

I'm really inspired by the amazing Lisa Gorman, Romance Was Born and Louise Olsen from Dinosaur Designs, and would love to paint any or all of them!

We are lucky enough to have two of Mia’s artworks for sale in Jumbled – Sassy Lady and Lovers (purchase online here)

I hope that you are all as excited as I am to welcome Mia into our Jumbled gang

Welcome... Kyah Wilson!

We are thrilled to welcome Kyah Wilson to the Jumbled gang! She is the super clever artist who created our latest piece to arrive in store "The Quirky Cow". Not only is she ultra talented, but she is also a total gem! We look forward to getting many more of her pieces in store for you all, but in the meantime here is a little bit about the woman behind our moo cow!

How did you get into painting?

I studied Fine Arts after school and also started a degree in Art Education, however made the decision to travel, marry and have children in lieu of completing it. When my youngest (of five children) started school this year, I found the time to focus on my career as an Artist. The feedback from my art has been extremely encouraging and I have been painting continuously for almost a year and I’ve been invited to show in several exhibitions.

What inspires you?

My new (old) house and studio overlooks the plains of the Macquarie River in Dubbo, NSW. I have 12 inquisitive steers who surround my studio in our back paddock. I watch amazing sunsets from there whilst my boys ride motorbikes and four wheelers amongst the cows. We walk the dogs down the river and often have fires. Therefore, I am constantly inspired by my home environment. We are also renovating, hence I pour through home magazines, Houzz, Instagram and Pinterest.

Describe your perfect day

My perfect day would start with exercise (which is very sporadic these days) and it would have to be summer at the beach with my family, listening to great music whilst reading home magazines. This would be followed by an early seafood dinner and drinks at a fabulous restaurant with some crazy friends.

What is your style at home?

I would describe my style as eclectic. I do love rustic and vintage wares along with pops of accent colour with accessories and art. I like being interchangeable and have a tendency to paint furniture and reupholster chairs!

What is your perfect colour combination?

This week it is a “velvety” green, navy and pink.

What is on your wish list?

My wish list is way too long. I would love a few (or a lot) of new pieces of furniture and joinery to fill our house. I would also love a vintage Turkish rug and vintage pendants above my kitchen bench. A new vibrant blue grand front door would be nice also.

You also teach art. What is the most important piece of wisdom you could pass onto aspiring artists?

Considering I have had such an intense and successful start to my career I have had to learn things quickly. Experimentation is the key. Experiment with different styles, subjects and mediums. Always use quality products and don’t be scared to make mistakes. If you are dissatisfied with your results paint over them until you love it. Art is entirely subjective, no one else has to love it, just you.

Kyah's The Quirky Cow is now for sale in store, and online.

WORKSHOP: Weave School

Weaving is the new black! Who would have thought that the seventies trend would be re-taking the world by storm!

We've spotted many woven textile art pieces in the most stylish of homes, now with the help of our Jumbled Weave Workshop you can get your weave on! The super talented Kel of Chief & Kewpie will be hosting a hands on introduction to weaving. We'll be learning 4 basic weaving techniques, and best of all you get a loom kit to take with you- so the fun can continue at home!

We wanted to get to know Kel a little more, so of course we asked her a few questions!

Describe your perfect day

Hmm kid free anything. Haha. But probably a day restaurant crawling without a budget and without the guilt. I'm a foodie. Big time.

What inspires your weaves?

I can't really pin point one thing in particular. I always start with colours first. Then get inspired by Aztec pattern and geometrics. I love to use lots of texture too.

Fave colour combo?

I love the neutral ones. They are scarce in this new vibrant technicolor style that's all the rage, but I love to use earthy colours and real fleece.

What is your style at home like?

It's fairly retro but also fairly hectic. Too many mirrors. Wait, there's no such thing. Lots of textiles & believe it or not, not ONE OF MY WEAVES. Crazy. I've got that indoor plant bug and love the life they bring to a room.

Mix or Match?

Mix! Always. Mix patterns, mix colours, CERTAINLY mix eras & styles. Nothing better than vintage / modern.

What got you weaving in the first place?

I saw some online, LOVED them and thought "you are not talented, you can make that, you are also not a mob wife, you can't afford that". I thought I'd give it a crack and just really liked doing it. It's therapeutic and really easy.

Classes held in store at Jumbled - 202 Anson St, Orange NSW 2800

Tickets are $195. Includes drinks, delish nibbles and a weaving take home kit.

Saturday 1st November 4 - 7pm
Sunday 2nd November 10am - 1pm

Seats are strictly limited so don't miss out! Buy online here or give us a call in store on (02) 6361 4447! The perfect way to spend a weekend, we can't wait to see you!

Lusting over WANDERLUST

The best part of travelling is storing all those memories so that you can relive your trip over and over again. Passionate travellers Axel & Ash thought the same, but they took that thought one step further and created the coolest journal that not only documents your travels, but becomes the most beautiful keepsake.

We couldn't wait to hear more about how Wanderlust was born! Our chat with Axel & Ash was so fascinating that we wanted to share it with you!

What inspired you to create WANDERLUST:

AXEL: I've traveled and worked around the world since my early 20's and I was always looking for a journal that would help me to capture all the fun memories and wild adventures in a easy, simple, beautiful way. I wanted something different, fun and inspiring. Something that made me think outside of the box and inspired me to write down the random things that happened to me to save until I am old and grey! One day me and Ash were sharing our bucketlists over a coconut drink on her balcony in Bondi to celebrate the last days of summer. We realized we both wanted to start a business with a friend and decided to go for it - now we just had to come up with something good.  I remembered the ide a I had for a couple of years of creating a book for all the Wanderlusters out there,  and as the passionate jetsetter and beautiful writer Ash is - I knew she'd love it! We pinky promised right there to show that we were both all in, and that this was not just a late night chat that would be gone in the morning. From that day we’ve been super committed.

Describe your perfect day:

AXELA perfect day for me is a day when I wake up with no plans. I go for a breakfast at a favv cafe just to suddenly find myself surrounded by friends off to the beach, swimming, laughing, loving ending up in someones garden having dinner, singing along to someones guitar until the early hours when I can't keep my eyes open anymore. That's perfection.

ASHWhen I wake up with a smile and go to bed with a smile. Because no matter what I did that day, my soul was filled in some way and I am still smiling at the end of it. That to me is a perfect day.

Where is your dream holiday destination:

AXEL: So many! I want to go everywhere. I love road trips for that reason - they take you anywhere your heart goes. Right now I am fascinated by The Caribbean... Jamaica, Aruba, Bahamas, Cuba. I find the incredible beauty and simplicity of this paradise archipelago, mixed with the lively, free-spirited, soulful people so charming. I want to go there for a few months and enjoy the laid-back vibe. I like to go places and live there for a while, to really immerse myself in the culture, get to know the locals and feel part of it the place rather than being a tourist.
I also just booked a ski-trip to Madonna di Campiglio in the Italian alps for a winter holiday with a bunch of friends. As I kid I skied in France and Austria every year, and I love Italy but I never went there for the snow season so that is a little dream coming through.

ASH: Sooo many!! Right now I really want to lay on the beach in St Tropez (South of France), Also, I would love to visit Cuba, Jamaica & Galapagos islands. Oh and there is also Richard Branson's Necker Island.

Best travel advice to jet setters and travel novices alike?

ASH: Be curious, don't be scared and explore as much as you can that is off the beaten track because that's where you will find the hidden gems and what the place is truly all about. And be open, even though you are in a foreign country, you can meet the most incredible people by talking to different people, even if it's the local fruit stall owner, everyone has a story to tell!
Also, drink lots of water on the plane or whilst your travelling place to place. Keeping hydrated is the key and will keep you energised if you are always on the go!

Where is the cool new place to travel?

AXEL: After the World cup and with the olympics coming up Brazil must be the hottest destination at the moment. Boosting everything from a colourful party culture with samba, soccer and carnivals to glorious beaches and the adventurous amazon rainforest with tribes living life totally separated from the modern society it has everything to offer.
Another spot I am hot on is Cape Town. I am mesmerized by the amazing landscape and cant wait to visit Woodstock which is a run-down suburb in Cape town. I am not only in love with the name of the place but it also boasts the award winning 'Neighbourgoods Market' - an artesian market full of beautiful local produce and the coolest tea caravan in the world - Lady Bonin's Tea parlour!
I have a love for these odd places and constantly find new cool, random hidden places like this that I want to visit. Check out our instagram where we share our secrets!

ASH: I think Berlin is a really cool place to visit in Europe, aswell as Texas in the States. Also, Jamaica I think is pretty amazing. And of course anywhere in Australia! Bondi & Byron is our two favourites in Australia.

Now that we've ignited your travel bug, pick up your own copy of Wanderlust and be prepared for a book full of wonderful memories!
